There are a few basic pieces of equipment shown in the picture below.
Mask
The main part of the mask is an interleaved mesh of steel forming a solid shield for the face and head. An integral bib protects the neck. The mask should fit snugly and is held in place by an arrangement of straps at the back.
Weapon
There are three main weapons. The foil is a light and flexible weapon used for thrusting and developed from training weapons. The epee is the development of the classic duelling rapier and is heavier than the foil, it is also used for thrusting. The sabre came from the cavalry weapon and is used for point thrusts and edge cuts. All of the weapons come in non-electric (called 'steam') and electric versions.
Glove
Usually only worn on the weapon hand, it protects the hand and lower arm.
Plastron
Sometimes called an under-plastron, it is a 'half-jacket' that provides additional protection for the leading arm and body. Women will also add a chest protector that is sometimes referred to as 'barbie boobs'.
Jacket
The jacket provides protection for the body and arms. Like the other items it is made so that there is no place where a weapon can get caught. The main opening, the zip, is placed on the non-leading side or at the back. There are different protection ratings available.
Breeches
Provide protection for the upper legs and cover to just below the knee. Padded socks are sometimes worn to protect the lower legs (usually when fighting epee where the legs are valid target areas).
